Seminar presentation summaries:

Mapping out the Language industry shifts: what’s dying and where language professionals can find new opportunities – Anne Chemali

In this session, we will examine the current shifts and trends that are shaping in the Language industry ecosystem. We will name the client and vendor side stakeholders. We will define quality from the end client’s point of view and examine what it takes to pair technology and humans to ensure language asset quality. We will examine the range of new opportunities for linguists, along with the mindset and skillset that will give them an edge on the job market.

LinkedIn job posting statistics and job market analysis + discussion – Hussein Abu-Rayyash, Amer Qotbi, Hanni Alotaibi (KSU PhD students)

Part 1: How to create an engaging and effective LinkedIn profile (45 minutes) – Corinne McKay

In this session, we'll look at the pitfalls and best practices of creating a LinkedIn profile that is visually appealing, contains all of the required information, and communicates what you do for clients (rather than your life story). We'll go top-to-bottom, from a customized profile URL and professional photograph (including alternatives to a traditional headshot), then the body of your profile (including sections you might not be using), wrapping up with the Recommendations section. We'll also look at online profile mistakes that we're all making ("orphaned" profiles, no contact information), and you'll receive a checklist of changes to make to your LinkedIn profile.

Part 2 : How to use LinkedIn for networking and outreach (45 minutes) – Corinne McKay

In this session, we'll look at how to make the best use of LinkedIn for networking and outreach. LinkedIn is not truly geared toward freelancers; it was designed for people looking for, or hiring for, full-time jobs. Yet, we have to make the best of it on LinkedIn, if we want to cultivate a network of colleagues and clients, particularly those we can't meet in person. We'll look at how to decide who to connect with, when to consider paying for LinkedIn Premium, what to say in your connection request notes, how to research potential clients on LinkedIn, how to use specific job titles to find people to connect with, and how to comment on your clients' and potential clients' posts without overdoing it.
